History

The Museum of Science and Industry was founded in 1933 as part of the Century of Progress Exposition, a world's fair held in Chicago. The museum was housed in the former Palace of Fine Arts, a neoclassical building that was one of the few structures that survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The museum was dedicated to the advancement of science and industry, and showcased innovations such as the first diesel engine, the first artificial heart, and the first nuclear reactor.

Over the years, the museum expanded its collection and exhibits, adding new features such as a coal mine, a submarine, a planetarium, an airplane, and a train. The museum also hosted special events and exhibitions, such as the Apollo 8 spacecraft, the Titanic artifacts, and the Body Worlds specimens. Today, the museum attracts more than 1.5 million visitors annually and covers more than 14 acres of land.
