A Brief History of Florida
The first inhabitants of Florida were Native American tribes, including the Calusa, Tequesta, and Timucua. They left behind evidence of their presence in the form of shell mounds, artifacts, and ceremonial sites.
Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de LeĂłn was the first European to reach Florida in 1513. He named the region "La Florida," meaning "land of flowers" in Spanish, and claimed it for Spain.
Florida changed hands between Spanish, British, and American control several times before becoming a U.S. territory in 1821. The Seminole Wars followed as Native Americans fought against forced relocation.
Florida became the 27th state in 1845. During the Civil War, it joined the Confederacy but was readmitted to the Union in 1868.
Florida experienced massive growth in the 20th century, driven by tourism, agriculture, and real estate development. Walt Disney World's opening in 1971 transformed Central Florida, while the Space Coast became home to NASA's Kennedy Space Center.
