Interesting Facts about St. Augustine Historic District
The Historic District is not only a beautiful destination, but also a treasure trove of fascinating history. Here are some interesting facts:
The district is home to the oldest wooden schoolhouse in the United States, built over 200 years ago from red cedar and cypress. The building is held together by wooden pegs and iron spikes, and it survived numerous hurricanes thanks to an anchor and chain added in 1937 to secure it to the ground.
The Castillo de San Marcos, which anchors the northern end of the district, is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. Built between 1672 and 1695, its walls are made of coquina, a unique shell-stone that actually compresses and absorbs cannonballs rather than cracking, making it an excellent defense material.
